The dogs take Over the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing: Queens, New York, for the The 148th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show 2024, and to Celebrate 131 Years of this amazing competition. The Westminster Kennel Club is America’s oldest organization dedicated to the sport of pure bred dogs. It was established in 1877. At New York City’s Madison Square Garden for many years, the Westminster Dog Show shifted locations several times throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This year the Westminster Dog Show was hosted at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing: Queens, New York, for the second year in a row.
Sage, a miniature poodle, was crowned the best in show at the 148th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, held Monday and Tuesday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. A powerful moving, perfectly coifed 3 ½-year-old black female Miniature Poodle named “Sage” (MBIS/MBISS GCHG Surrey Sage) captured a place in history winning Best in Show at the 2024 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Presented by Purina Pro Plan. Sage was crowned best in show during the annual event, beating out more than 2,500 other dogs: 
See in the above photo: the coveted win at the prestigious dog show was bittersweet for handler Kaz Hosaka of Greenwood, Delaware, who is retiring after 45 years in the sport. “I have been very lucky,” he said. Hosaka has won seven Westminster Non-Sporting Group Firsts, and Sage is his second Westminster Best in Show winner. In 2002, Hosaka handled the Miniature Poodle “Spice” (CH Surrey Spice Girl) to Best in Show, the first Miniature Poodle to win at Westminster since 1959. Spice is the great-great-granddam of Sage. Hosaka bred both Miniature Poodles. 
“Sage made me very proud tonight,” Hosaka said after the show. “Poodles are not easy to show. There were lots of echoes, lot of people, and she managed it. She did it for me.” “The Miniature Poodle has beautiful type, an incredible head and incredible coat. She has a great tail set and showed like a million bucks,” said Rosalind Kramer of High Point, North Carolina, the Best in Show judge. Sage won her career 35th Best in Show at the 148th Westminster Dog Show May 14, 2024, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. The Miniature Poodle topped more than 2,500 dogs representing 200 breeds. Sage makes 17 of the past 18 Westminster Best in Show winners fueled to their wins by Purina Pro Plan. Hosaka came to the U.S. in 1977 to apprentice with revered Poodle breeder Anne Rogers Clark. After she passed away, he continued the bloodline, devoting nearly 50 years to the Surrey breeding program.
“It took 22 years to win the first Westminster Best in Show, and another 22 years today to win the second one,” Hosaka said. “It was always my dream to win at Westminster.” The No. 1 all-systems Miniature Poodle in 2023, Sage currently is the No. 1 all-breed Miniature Poodle. Among her wins, Sage won the Non-Sporting Group at the AKC National Championship in 2023. Kathleen Wallen is the co-breeder of Sage and Cathy Gauche of Houston is the owner. The Westminster Best in Show winner is fed Pro Plan All Ages Sport Performance 30/20 Salmon & Rice Formula dog food.

Through the 134th Westminster Show (February 2010), Best in Show has been won by the Terrier Group 45 out of the 103 times that the prize has been awarded since 1907, that’s more than twice as many wins as any other group. The single breed that has won the most is the Wire Fox Terrier, which has won 14 times! The wire fox terrier has won Westminster more than any other dog breed, with 15 Best in Show wins.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the preeminent authority on what makes a good dog. There have been 115 winners so far. Of those winners, none have come from the three most popular breeds in America: French bulldog, Labrador retriever or golden retriever.

Despite rising in the most popular rankings the past few years to dethrone the 31-year leader, the Labrador Retriever, the French Bulldog has never won Best in Show at Westminster. The breed did, however, win Reserve Best in Show at Westminster in 2022.
The majestic breed, ranked 16th in popularity by the AKC, has been shown at the Westminster Dog Show since 1887. But Great Danes have only won Best of Group five times, the latest being all the way back in 1983.
The feature film will tell the true Cinderella story behind the 1980 Westminster Kennel Club show, where young Trish Kanzler handled her mother’s red Siberian Husky, Cinnar, to Best in Show—a remarkable feat, considering it was done with no money, a 23-year-old handler, and a dog who had lost part of an ear in a scrap. 
Some of the most memorable Westminster Dog Show Winners include Warren Remedy, a Smooth Fox Terrier who won Best in Show twice in 1907 and 1909, and Ch. Warren Remedy, a Wire Fox Terrier who won in 1910. In 1933, Wareland’s Lucky Break, an Airedale Terrier, made history as the first dog to win Best in Show three times!

The Westminster Kennel Club is excited to announce that the 149th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina Pro Plan will return to Manhattan in February 2025. Daytime events will kick off on February 8 and will be held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on all three days. The evening events on February 10 & 11, including group judging and the Best in Show ceremony, will take place at New York City’s iconic Madison Square Garden (MSG). The 2025 return is a continuation of the long-standing relationship between The Garden and The Westminster Kennel Club – marking the first time since 2020 that the Dog Show will be held at MSG, where it was one of the storied venue’s original events.
Featuring nearly 3,000 top-winning dogs, the 149th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will feature its 12th Annual Masters Agility Championship presented by Purina Pro Plan on February 8 at the Javits Center. The events on February 10 & 11 across both venues will include breed competitions, group judging, and the Junior Showmanship competition, culminating with the coveted Best in Show ceremony at Madison Square Garden on the evening of February 11.
