The directors of the Sweet! XR Experience were the Rene van Engelenburg and Gijs ten Cate from DROPSTUFF MEDIA, are Dutch designers known for their immersive experiences and for their work with the intersection between art and audience engagement.
The Sweet! XR Experience was all about colliding the addictive substance of sugar and its biological effects on our brains with the similarly dizzying effects of AI, warning the public of the addictive tendencies that may arise with the rising uses of AI technology.
With the experience only lasting 5 minutes, it is paving the way for conversations regarding the dangers of AI by opening up the very necessary line of questioning of what the effects that this new technology may lead to. Similarly to sugar and its high dopamine prevalence in American foods, AI is beginning to find itself in a similar position: a high dopamine response while seeing the beginning of its embeddedness in our technology.
Their physical installation involved the use of projections mapping the area, eliciting the users’ opinion with various questions to begin that conversation while keeping it quick and simple. While some may have found it to be an artificial conversation that led felt lackluster, I found it to be an enriching experience that made one of my top XR experiences at SXSW. The fun uses of lollipops and candies created that imperative bridge between AI and sugar, generating an overall thoughtful and enlightening experience.
